This week’s #AskAlison covers a question about WordPress themes.
WordPress is great because it’s so widely supported, but one downside to that is the abundance of themes to choose from. How do you find the best WordPress theme and avoid the issues commonly found in the poorly developed ones?
This is a question that every web developer struggles with and learns the hard way over time. There are many themes out there that are more trouble than they are worth, and others that are worth their weight in gold.
So, how do you spot a good one?
- Stick to the most widely used themes or marketplaces.
- Read the reviews and choose one based on the answers you find.
- Look for good support. Some developers provide superior support, others to not.
- Look for features that are as close to what you need as possible. The more your theme matches your needs, the better you will be.
Personally, I’m a fan of the Divi theme from Elegant Themes. In the past few years it’s become the number one theme used for WordPress sites. But more than that, I love it for its versatility. Whether you are a hard core developer, or a small business owner who is not that technical, you can create a website that’s as complex as you want it to be. My favorite part of it is that it’s a blank slate. If I can’t find a layout to base a build off of, I can build the idea that’s in my head quickly and efficiently.
Have you tried Divi? What do you think?
