Why is it important to find a niche? – #AskAlison

I know how it is when you first start your business from the ground up. All you’re looking for is a bit of momentum. Any client will help with that, right? So you take on them all. Family friend? Check. Client in an industry you know nothing about that you connected with on a Facebook group? Yep. Low-balling client expecting the world on a super-tight budget? Check, check, check.

Suddenly, your days are spent frantically working for the handful of low-paying clients you’ve gained. You’re proud to have earned the work you have, but the benefits you expected to see from owning your own business aren’t quite there. Your earnings month-to-month are lower and much more unstable than you’d like. The passion you want to have for your work and your clients is sorely lacking.

You can picture your dream client, but you have no idea where to find them or how to attract them. You can imagine how you want your business to look, but you have no idea how to get there.

If this sounds like you, you’re like many, many new (and seasoned) business owners. Owning a business is appealing for the autonomy it grants you as a business owner, but it’s no secret that owning a company doesn’t give you control of everything. Sometimes, it feels like you’re in control of nothing.

Thankfully, there are ways around this business owner conundrum. One great way is to establish a niche for your business. Some even say it’s the key to business success, and you can’t succeed without it. You’ve likely heard about the importance of having a niche, and you may be wondering why it’s so important.

Let’s get into it—what is a niche? What are the benefits of having one? And how do you figure out yours?

What is a niche in business?

Having a niche is business is all about gearing your marketing efforts towards a particular population, or niche. Most businesses have lots of competition, making it hard to stand out and attract quality clients. Narrowing your offerings down to a niche population limits your potential clients, but it makes you stand out as a great choice to a smaller community.

If you don’t like the idea of narrowing down your business’s reach, don’t worry! You don’t have to market solely to your niche. You can have a broader target audience while also having a narrower niche.

You might create a niche based on geography (New Yorkers), an age group (30-45-year-olds), or an even more specific demographic (moms who can’t afford premium athleisure brands but want the look for less). Sometimes, finding the perfect niche involves seeing a gap in the market.

Just think of every successful entrepreneur on Shark Tank—every one of them wanted a product or service that didn’t exist yet, so they created it. The same principle applies to all businesses! Even if you’re not creating something brand new, you can still set yourself apart by picking a unique niche.

What are the benefits of having a niche?

Working with your dream clients
Ready to find clients that you currently only dream of having? The ones that are a match made in heaven for what you offer? The ones who respect your expertise and are willing to (and even eager to) pay for it? By establishing yourself as an expert in your niche, you’ll seem like a no-brainer pick to your dream clients and have a much easier time landing them.

Building a reputation of expertise for your brand
The longer you work in your niche, the more reputable and trustworthy you’ll seem to potential clients. Soon, you won’t have to spend time and energy hunting down clients. Through word-of-mouth, you’ll have new clients coming to you.

Increased visibility and reduced competition
The more you grow a reputation of expertise in your niche, the more the word about your business will spread. The more you grow, the less competition will be able to keep up. This is how choosing a niche and committing to growth in that area lets you beat out all the others.
